Subtract Mixed Numbers Solver

Learn how to subtract mixed number solver: Mixed numbers are nothing but mixed fractions. We could not subtract mixed numbers  directly. We have to convert mixed numbers to improper fractions. Then we have to carry out set of steps solver to subtract mixed numbers. First let us study how to convert mixed numbers(a whole number + a proper fraction)  to improper fractions(Numerator is greater than the denominator). Consider a fraction 3`(1)/(2)` . Let us convert this mixed number to improper fraction. Multiply the whole number 3 with denominator 2 and add 1 to it and that forms the numerator i.e., (3 x 2) + 1 = 6 + 1 = 7. The denominator remains as it is. So, 3`(1)/(2)` = `(7)/(2)` .

5`(2)/(3)` = `((5 xx 3) + 2)/(3)` = `(17)/(3)`

`(1)/(5)` = `((7 xx 5) + 1)/(5)` = `(36)/(5)`
Steps Used to Subtract Mixed Numbers Solver:

The following steps used to subtract mixed numbers solver are:

1. First change the mixed number to improper fraction.

2. Check the denominators of the two fractions.

3. If the denominators are same, then subtract the numbers in the numerators and write the denominator as it is.

4. If the denominators are different, then find the LCM of the denominators.

5. Check what number has to be multiplied with the  denominator of the first fraction to make it equal to the LCM and then multiply the same number with the numerator.

6. Check what number has to be multiplied with the  denominator of the second fraction to make it equal to the LCM and then multiply the same number with the numerator.

7. Now, subtract the numbers in the numerators and write the denominator as it is.
Example Problem on Subtract Mixed Numbers Solver:

`7(1)/(5) - 5 (2)/(3)`

Solution:

`7(1)/(5) - 5(2)/(3) = 36/5 - 17/3`                   (change the mixed number to improper fraction)

= `(36 xx 3)/(5 xx 3) - (17 xx 5)/(3 xx 5)`            (Denominators are different. So take the LCM of 3 and 5. The LCM is 15)

= `108/15 - 85/15`

= `(23)/(15)` = 1`(8)/(15)`
